Rainforest Maths

RAINFOREST maths is an interactive resource website to assist student exploration and practice in the world of mathematics. The web was created by Jenny Eather and it has a wide range of activities for children from kinder to 6th grade. (http://www.rainforestmaths.com/)

Practice it!

  • Select Level CClass Grade/Year 2

m3p3_2.jpg

  • Then, select Volume, that it is in the Measurement section.

m3p3_3.jpg

  • Students practise the concept of volume by counting the cubes of the figure and writing the number in the box.

m3p3_4.jpg

  • Once the number is written, the students have to m3p3_5.jpg their answer and move to the m3p3_6.jpg volume figure to count. If their answer is wrong, they do not get any point but they can move to the next screen.

From one screen to another, the figure gets more and more complicated and it becomes more difficult to count the cubes.

  • If the level is too easy or too difficult for your students, you can move up or down to suit. Before leaving the activity and move to another level by clicking on the icon m3p3_7.jpg, students can do another task. Click on m3p3_8.jpg. Now they have to count the cubes that will fill the container. No clues are given.

If the students have difficulties imagining the volume and they do not know how many cubes fill the container, they can click on the icon m3p3_10.jpg. The container is filled with cubes and it becomes easier to guess the number of cubes.

Activity framework

  • Methodology:this activity may be done in cicle superior after presented the concept of volume or previously to introduce it. It may be done in the classroom using a beamer connected to a computer with internet connection. As in practises before, and to make the activity more interactive allowing the whole class participation, you can use a wireless mouse and keyboard and pass them around the class. If you do not have a wireless equipment, your students can take turns to do the activity.

Another possibility is to move to the computer room and let the students work in pairs. They can help each other and take turns to guess the number of cubes.

If the level is too easy or too difficult for your students, you can move up or down to suit.

  • Timing: 30 minutes
  • Resources: computer with internet connection. Flash Player 6 or above is needed (if required, you can download it)
  • Complementary material: real containers and cubes to fill them up. It will allow manipulation.
