BBC. Learning English | |||||||||
The BBC is one of the pioneering websites to offer materials for both learners and teachers of English. There you will find all kinds of activities, many of which come with the audio.You can also download most of the materials. The resources in all the sections of this page are endless, specially for advanced level students, but we are going to focus on a couple of them, leaving the rest for you to explore on your own. | |||||||||
Practice it! | |||||||||
|
1. Go to BBC Learning English. Click on Grammar and vocabulary on the left and select Funky Phrasals. The phrasal verbs are presented in a context, and you can learn them while you read and listen to a conversation. 2. Select School days from the list of topics on the left. In Part 1A you may download the audio text and the transcript. The verbs that will be dealt with in this section are in a box.
4. Go back to the BBC Learning English main page. This time, click on The Flatmates, on the left frame. This is a kind of soap opera about four people sharing a flat, which serves as an excuse to introduce grammar and vocabulary points. For each episode you get the audio version, a language point and a quiz. All the materials are downloadable, which makes it all the more interesting if you want to work offline. 5. The main page shows the current episode. To start from the very beginning, go to Backgroud, where the characters are introduced. Then go to Archive. Episode one starts with Tim and Helen waiting for Michael, Tim's cousin, at the airport. You may listen to it while you read, or hide the text and just listen.

Check also the Quizzes section. In this part of the site there are hundreds of quizzes to test a wide range of vocabulary and grammar (Quiznet archive). A new quiz is added every week. Many of the activities include audio (eg. Where to next? or The commentary box), and there are also some interactive language games (Wordmaster and Back of the net) News English contains news stories with vocabulary definitions. In Watch & Listen the activities involve listening and watching; some come with video and comprehension quizzes as well. It is also worth mentioning the Welcome to London and Music Directory sections. |
