Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab

As you see, there are 5 different sections (with 3 levels each): General Listening Quizzes / Listening Quizzes for Academic Purposes / 20-Minute ESL Vocabulary Lessons / Language Learning and Life Tips / Long Conversations with RealVideo.

2. In the General Listening Quizzes, Easy, click on Family activities. It's a conversation between a man and a young girl. This activity, like all others, is divided in 3 parts:

  • Pre-listening exercices - questions to introduce and raise the interest in the topic.
  • Listening exercices
  • Post-listening exercises - questions to open a debate.

Choose one or other option, depending on which program you have installed in your computer.

3. There are three steps in each exercise:

  • In the first place, listen and do the multiple choice comprehension exercise. At the end, you get a score and the correct answers.
  • The next step is to listen to the conversation again as you read the Quiz Script.
  • Finally, do the Text Completion Quiz while you listen once more. You will also be given a score.

Click on Study Self-Study Guide: View Listening Activities by Topic. Under this section you will find a guide and a search engine to help you find the specific topics you want to learn. The exercises are classified according to language function and level: Easy (E), Medium (M), and Difficult (D).

An excellent resource for teachers is found on the left of the main page:

The FREE Handouts contains documents that can be used to familiarize users with this site and to help teachers and students keep track of their learning on this site. The handouts are free, and come in two formats: pdf and doc (which can be modified to suit your needs).

Methodology: there are several ways to incorporate these listenings into your lessons: you may want to spend a whole hour doing different listening exercises, or complement some reading, grammar or vocabulary exercise.

Download one of the worksheets: Self-Grading Quizzes, Language Learning Tips, Vocabulary and distribute it to your students. Have them give it back at the end of the session.

Resources: Make sure the computer has either Real Audio or Windows Media installed. It might be a good idea to lend the students some headphones (or make them bring their own), so that they do not interfere with each other's listening.
